Hunger is big. Our community is bigger.

Thousands of walkers came together on Sunday proving that
our community is bigger than hunger.

Our new look, revealed at Sunday's Walk Against Hunger, reflects this new focus, honoring the connection and energy between all of us, the people we help, our community partners, and the real heroes—our donors and volunteers.

Hunger is bigger than food, and it takes hard work and commitment to build a healthy future for everyone in Greater Hartford. You have truly made it possible for people who rely on Foodshare’s programs to keep food on the table, and we certainly could not do this work without you!

It's not too late to make a gift and help us reach our goal of $575,000. Your support keeps us moving forward. It makes a difference...YOU make a difference. Or check out our photos from Walk day >

A Community United Against Hunger

The Foodshare Walk Against Hunger is this Sunday, May 7. Rain or shine, this is our chance to tell the world that hunger is not okay.

It is not okay for a senior, who worked for decades, to be standing in line at a food pantry. It is not okay for members of our military to be worried about putting dinner on the table each night. And it is not okay for children, through no fault of their own, to be hungry when they head off to school.

We are so grateful to have some of our favorite, and most committed local celebs kicking things off on the main stage—Scot Haney from WFSB Channel 3 Eyewitness News and Renee DiNino from iHeart Media's Community Access. Long-time supporters of Foodshare, they both understand the hard road ahead, but they also know the strength of a community united against hunger.

Hunger is indeed big.
We believe the Foodshare community is bigger.

National Volunteer Week: Thank YOU!

Here at Foodshare, we would not be able to lead an informed, coordinated response to hunger without help from our volunteers. Last year, more than 4,700  people donated 44,000 hours – the equivalent of 22 additional full-time employees – through opportunities like Mobile Foodshare, Retail Pick-up, office work, food sorting, Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) boxes and SNAP Outreach.

National Volunteer Week is a chance to inspire, recognize, and encourage volunteers and demonstrate that, by working together, we have the fortitude to overcome challenges and meet our goals.

To celebrate, we will be showcasing some of our dedicated volunteers and their stories as well as providing treats at both our Hartford and Bloomfield locations. If you're interested in sharing your own experience with Foodshare or any of our 300 partner agencies, we'd love to hear from you!

On behalf of Foodshare, and the 137,000 food insecure people you are helping here at home, thank you for sharing your time and talents to make food accessible for all! #NVW2017  #GYSD

A Word of Thanks from our President & CEO

To Foodshare’s loyal supporters,

No matter how you feel about the last few days, you should be proud of your commitment to the issues you believe in.

The truth remains: regardless of personal politics, we all deeply rely on one another to make this world work for everyone.

“There is potential to do a lot of good for our community and help a lot of people. Working together gives us an opportunity to achieve an outcome that is far more than the sum of our individual parts.”

Those words belong to Chris, a helper and hunger-fighting activist I met recently. Chris and his family were living with hunger after their triplets were born, but thanks to the support of the community, they rose up from a very difficult situation. His family is living proof that when we come together, there is nothing we can’t solve, and no limit to the good we can do.

I thank you for every gift of your hard-earned money that puts food on the table for your struggling neighbors. And I thank you for every hour of time you have worked on the issue of hunger, or discussed it with the people who mean the world to you.

After leading the efforts on hunger relief and prevention in Greater Hartford for nearly 35 years, we know one thing for certain – this work requires the efforts of everyone. It is only together that we can make every challenge attainable, and it is your actions each and every day that make the biggest difference.

This Thanksgiving, let’s remember we all have much to be thankful for. Foodshare remains strong and stable and at work in your community – because of you. Thank you for supporting what you deeply believe in, and for being a helper.

My best wishes,

James Arena-DeRosa
President & CEO

Livin' the Dream

Foodshare employees recently enjoyed a special treat when recording artist Drake White stopped by with a few of his friends from Ford Motor Company and Country 92.5 to celebrate "Livin' the Dream by Givin' the Dream." He spent the morning volunteering alongside Foodshare supporters, and then performed live for staff and special guests, including our friends from Connecticut Food Bank. Drake was in town with the Zach Brown Band and to help kick off Ford's "Fill A Ford" food and fund drive. A special thank you to Drake and Ford for kicking off your journey here at Foodshare!

A Little Rain Couldn't Dampen Our Spirits

Despite a steady rain, thousands of walkers made their way to downtown Hartford on Sunday, May 1 to show their commitment to our hungry neighbors in Greater Hartford. Foodshare President & CEO, James Arena-DeRosa, said it best when he shared his own story from the stage. “As I looked out my window on Sunday, getting ready for my first ‘Walk’ in Hartford, I was disappointed—it was overcast, rainy, and cold. But then I thought about Francis, a man I recently met who happens to be blind, and who walks each day with his service dog to the local food pantry. Almost a mile this man walks—in rain, in snow, in cold—because he is hungry and because he can’t afford bus fare.”

While dollars from the 33rd Annual Foodshare Walk Against Hunger are still being counted, walkers have so far raised $564,284—including a $30,000 match from The Chase Family Foundations. This money will secure healthy food for people like Francis, who struggle to put food on the table.

Check out all of our Walk photos online

Local celebrities, including Brad Davis from WDRC’s Talk of Connecticut, Chaz from 102.9 The Whale and Kim Lucey from WFSB, were all there to support the effort and get walkers energized. The rain did not dampen spirits, and while many people sported orange ponchos—distributed by Foodshare—you could still make out team shirts from groups like CCSU, Grace Lutheran Church and Cognizant. And of course, hundreds of employees from The Hartford swathed the park in sea of blue.

Teams or walkers who have not yet turned in their pledges are urged to do so right away. Foodshare is still accepting donations, online at FoodshareWalk.org or by mail. And thanks to the generosity of event sponsors like The Hartford and Stop & Shop, every dollar raised will increase access to healthy food for children, seniors and working-poor families across the region, ensuring a stronger and healthier community for us all.

Night Market at Billings Forge TONIGHT!

UPDATE (4/22/16):  Congratulations to Foodshare's Frog Hollow Hunger Action Team (HAT) and the Hartford Food System for a successful Night Market held on April 18! Over ninety people attended, receiving free food, SNAP assistance, and information on services available in the community, like the Mobile Market -- offering affordable, high quality produce year-round to low-income neighborhoods.

The Night Market was developed out of a need for access to healthy food, but it also provided local residents with an opportunity to come together as a community. Being held during the evening hours meant all those who typically work during the day could participate. The event was so successful that members of the HAT plan to make it on a monthly occurrence.

---
Please come out and support the NIGHT Market on Monday, April 18th from 4pm to 7pm at Billings Forge, 538 Broad Street, in Hartford. Parking is available at 227 Lawrence Street, which is 1 block from Billings Forge.

This is a project of the Frog Hollow Hunger Action Team, one of our newest HATs. Congratulations to all who helped make this possible!

National Volunteer Week: Ways you can help!

Foodshare: Regional Market &emdash; Bank of America 4-23-12
Here at Foodshare, we would not be able to accomplish our mission of eliminating hunger without the more than 6,200 volunteers who help us at every step along the way, from our distribution center to our Hunger Action Teams in the community.

So we're happy to celebrate National Volunteer Week, which has been a tradition since 1974. It's about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging the millions of Americans who give their time and talents to help others.

There are plenty of good reasons to volunteer. It feels great giving back. It allows you to make new friends and gain new perspectives. You'll help people who need your time, your effort and your willingness to listen and understand. And if you're thinking of a career change, it's a great way to expand your network, gain new skills and show prospective employers you're committed to your community.

Foodshare is always looking for volunteers to help us accomplish our goals. Whether it's sorting food in our Bloomfield distribution center, serving as a member of a Hunger Action Team or becoming an e-advocate, there are so many ways you can help us eliminate hunger and food insecurity, one meal at a time.

Here's a look at the opportunities Foodshare is offering right now. See something you like? Click here to register and get involved!

Meet Us Where We Are

HartBeat Ensemble presents Meet Us Where We Are, an Asylum Hill Neighborhood Investigative Project, for three performances: February 5 at 7:30pm, February 6 at 7:30pm and February 7 at 2:00pm. All performances will include a community conversation focused on Hartford’s Asylum Hill neighborhood following the show.

Meet Us Where We Are is a civic theater experience in two acts: half of the program will be a scripted performance using the interviews that HartBeat assembled from residents of South Marshall Street in Asylum Hill. The second half of the program will be a live, unscripted civic dialogue. This will give the audience an opportunity to listen and then speak their minds on the issues that have been raised. Civic leaders and residents will discuss action plans for the future of the neighborhood.

Get your 'Game' on this November!

Thanksgiving is a holiday for everyone--something shared across communities, across faiths, across the country. Your gift of a turkey (or several turkeys!) will ensure that your neighbors who are struggling can join in the celebration. And your gift of cash will help put food on the table after the holiday has come to an end.

Take part in Turkey Wars, and battle it out to collect the most turkeys -- a friendly competition between friends to help our hungry neighbors. Or visit http://www.aTurkeyand30.org/ to learn more about the ways you can fight hunger this November!

Collaboration can change lives

Foodshare is so proud to be a part of this work in the Asylum Hill Neighborhood, and to be partnering with so many other wonderful organizations:

"Invest in each other and work together...collaboration has increased understanding of the issues facing South Marshall Street residents. Coordinated advocacy has rallied more volunteers and greater resources to support South Marshall’s transformation. Projects include an expanded family-friendly annual block party, immigrant and refugee-welcoming programs, ESL classes for adults, nutrition programs, a playground, urban gardens, improved public safety, and more Habitat homes.

While these initiatives hold much promise, long-term success depends on sustained commitment. Transformation of South Marshall has the potential to improve many lives as it has for the Bougonou family."

Walking Together for the Common Good

The diversity of participants taking part in Sunday’s Foodshare Walk Against Hunger makes a very important point – hunger does not discriminate. Thousands of people of all ages, races and religions, gathered at Hartbeat Park – owned by Presenting Sponsor, The Hartford – to speak out against this issue affecting more than 137,000 of our closest friends and neighbors. The dollars are still being counted, but so far walkers have raised $530,478 to fight hunger.

We are so grateful to groups like The Hartford, who engage hundreds of employees in this one event. This year, their team alone raised $210,000 in support of Foodshare, including a $20,000 sponsorship! And then there’s the grassroots effort happening – small businesses, schools, civic and faith groups – all coming together for the common good. The Chase Challenge, issued by the Chase Family Foundation, provided an additional match to the first 50 Walkers who raised more than $600 benefiting Foodshare, a $30,000 boost!

We have until month’s end before we have to close the books on this important fundraiser. That means there is still plenty of time to show your support. Every extra dollar means three more meals for one of our hungry neighbors. Those wishing to make a donation in support of Foodshare, or a registered Walker, may do so by clicking the button below, or by calling 860-286-9999. Any teams or walkers who have not yet turned in their pledges should do so right away.
