Because Windsor does not have the federal Summer Food Service Program to help low-income families with meals for children in the summer, the Windsor Food Bank was creative about how to help these families. Working through the schools, the Windsor Food Bank let families know that if their children receive free lunch at school, they could get food for the family during the summer from the Food Bank.
This was a successful effort this past summer, with a total of 41 families signing up for the bi-weekly food distribution. 15 of these families were new to the Food Bank. They provided food for 107 children in these 41 families for 10 weeks with a budget of just $1,000! Foodshare provided a mixed bag of fresh produce for each family for each distribution. In the evaluation survey given to the families at the end of the summer, the response was 100% positive...the only suggestions were for more fruit and pancake mix!
