Volunteer talent leads Foodshare's communication efforts

Name: Andrea Obston

Occupation:  Owner, Andrea Obston Marketing Communications

Role at Foodshare:  Member of Board of Directors and chair of PR Council

How long with Foodshare?  I’ve lost count.  I started as a committee member well over ten years ago.”

How you first became involved with Foodshare:  “Gloria asks; I say yes.”

Why I support Foodshare: “The idea of hunger is this state was news to me.  The more I learn about this problem, the more the size and scope of it impresses me and makes me want to do something to stem the tide of hunger insecurity in this area.”

Most recent accomplishment: Survived Storm Alfred by sleeping in my office for six days with my husband and two dogs and all of us are still on good terms.

A personal/professional goal: To be recognized as an important resource for those going through crisis who need help managing and preserving their reputation during and beyond the crisis.

What was the hardest thing you’ve learned while volunteering with Foodshare? The number of children who are hungry and what their families have to do to feed them

What has changed the most at Foodshare in your time with us? The addition of fresh fruits and vegetables through the organization’s presence at the Regional Market as well as the Mobile Foodshare distribution system for the fresh food.

What has stayed the same? The organization’s passion for its mission

What one word would you use to describe yourself? Creative

What are you most proud of? That my company will turn 30 years old in 2012

Share something about yourself that few people know: I have always wanted to do stand-up comedy

From where does your inspiration / motivation to volunteer come? I have always thought that giving back was a part of being a complete human being.  Nothing makes you feel better - no matter what’s going on in your life - than giving whatever you can to help other people.

About your volunteer experience at Foodshare?  It has changed me for the better.  I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside people with such passion for their mission.

What do others say about Andrea?  She has been our go-to person on all communications and public relations issues for a very long time, even prior to her being elected to the Board of Directors in 2003.  She helped us write our first PR plan and continues to provide leadership and advice to the team.  We would not be where we are today without her!
