Concerns about fraud in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly called food stamps) are common. In a blog post yesterday, USDA Undersecretary Kevin Concannon wrote about the agency's efforts to eliminate fraud. A key action has been cutting off stores that fraudulently handle SNAP benefits.
USDA also launched a Fighting SNAP Fraud website to raise awareness of integrity issues and provide a direct portal to report suspicious activities.
While fraud with SNAP is at its lowest levels ever, any fraud is a theft of taxpayer's money, so I applaud USDA's efforts to minimize fraud while still helping people in need.
