TO ADDRESS KEY NUTRITION PROGRAMS
SNAP and EMERGENCY FOOD TO BE HIGHLIGHTED
BEFORE CONGRESSMEN JOE COURTNEY, ROSA DELAURO, and CONGRESSIONAL STAFF
HARTFORD, CT -- A coalition of nutrition assistance organizations will gather at the Legislative Office Building at the State Capitol in Hartford to support the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formally known as Food Stamps), The Emergency Food Assistance Feeding Program (TEFAP) and Nutrition Education. Members of the community and non-profits will speak before Congressman Joe Courtney and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro on the importance of the programs in Connecticut. A short nutrition puppet show will be presented.
Who: Rosa DeLauro (Congresswoman, CT-2); Joe Courtney (Congressman CT-3); Ellen Vollinger, Food Research and Action Center; Lucy Nolan, End Hunger CT!; Nancy Carrington, CT Food Bank; Gloria McAdam, Foodshare; Katie Martin, UConn School of Public Health; Stan Sorkin, CT Food Association; SNAP recipients, members of food pantry and faith-based organizations will speak to the growing need and call for a strong Nutrition Title to the Farm Bill.
What: The Farm Bill, being debated in Congress right now, funds the key nutrition programs such as SNAP, TEFAP and SNAP nutrition education. Extensive cuts to the programs have been proposed both in the national budget and the Farm Bill. The Forum will address those cuts with examples from those working with and those using the programs in Connecticut.
