Kids in the garden

Did you read about the Enfield Lunch Bunch in the most recent issue of Newshare?  This program, sponsored by the Enfield Food Shelf has brought the Summer Food Service Program to Enfield and helps provide lunches to children from low-income families while school is out in the summer.

I just heard from Roger LeBlanc, the tireless volunteer leader of the Lunch Bunch about their new garden, which he says is flourishing behind St. Patrick's Church, where the summer meals are served.  Roger has recruited "kid mentors" who selected what to plant - cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and hot peppers - and who tilled, weeded, and added organic fertilizer.  Each of them also has an assigned day to check on the garden.  Family members and other volunteers are also pitching in to help.

What a great project!  Kids learn to garden and then get to eat the healthy food they grew!

Congratulations to everyone in Enfield who is making this great work possible!
