How Foodshare will secure more food donations, part two

Last year, Foodshare distributed enough food to make 11 million meals…

And yet, that’s just three or four meals per hungry person per week…

It covers just 25% of the need.

Clearly, we must do more and do better!

We have a plan – to provide an additional 2.5 million meals each year!
       Expanded retail store pick-up
Increased capacity at the Hartford Regional Market
Expanded volunteer sorting and re-packing at Bloomfield Distribution Facility

See our plans about part one, expanded retail store pick-up here.

Today, let’s take a look at part two – increased capacity at the Regional Market:

By doubling the size of Foodshare’s Hartford facility, we can:
Separate the cooler into three sections allowing for multiple temperature zones and extending the life of the produce
Add more loading docks to ease congestion and improve safety
Segregate the volunteer work space from loading / unloading areas, improving safety
Provide up to 3 sorting stations for volunteer groups.
Increase our distribution of produce by 35% over the next 3 years!

With 4 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables already moving through Foodshare’s system, this will bring it to the point where close to half of the food we distribute is fresh produce!

Check back again for more information on part three of our plans – the expanded volunteer work area at our Bloomfield facility.
