MAINE MOVING TO PHOTOS ON SNAP BENEFIT CARDS; FEDS OBJECT

Maine is moving ahead with its plan to put photos on its electronic benefits transfer cards used for food stamps and cash assistance, according to the Bangor Daily News. The state has started a voluntary pilot project in Bangor to test the program before full implementation in the summer. It sent letters to card users, asking them to trade in their old cards for new ones with photos. Federal officials have expressed concerns about the program, saying it may violate federal law and regulations and result in the state risking legal action and losing federal funds. They urged Maine to delay implementation.
