As self-sufficiency is a pillar of Foodshare’s strategic plan to shorten the lines of those seeking food assistance, eleven members of our Agency Advisory Council (AAC) met last week to learn more about the Affordable Care Act.
Claudia Epright, a member of the Education and Development Division of Access Health CT, provided an excellent overview around the history of healthcare reform in Connecticut as well as a brief description of the major features of the Affordable Care Act. She also shared a wealth of information on how to assist low-income households in signing up for coverage and met with agency coordinators to discuss particular client cases in detail.
While training to guide households through the enrollment process is currently limited to personnel from community health care organizations, Claudia hopes that a curriculum targeted to partner agency staff and volunteers will soon be available.
Many members of the AAC were energized by the possibility of helping the clients they currently provide with food assistance, case management, financial literacy, employment, and referral services with the added benefit of affordable health insurance.
