Teaching financial literacy skills to build self-suffiency

Because one of Foodshare's goals is to build the self-sufficiency of low-income households so that they won't need to go to the local food pantry any more, we hosted a Roundtable meeting for those food pantries about financial literacy issues this week.

Denise Smith, Coordinator of the CT Money School with the Connecticut Association of Human Services, and Jim Goldman, volunteer Money Coach, led the Roundtable on June 4 with about 20 local food pantries or other social service agencies in attendance.

Both Denise and Jim have worked directly with clients for a number of years (as well as managing programs, professional investment advisors, etc.) and spoke compellingly of the assistance available through CT Money School workshops, one-on-one Financial Coaching and one-on-one Money Coaching (for more urgent needs of clients and more short term than Financial Coaching).

The local programs were urged to consider hosting workshops/coaches as well as having their staff/volunteers trained in delivering  this kind of assistance to the people they serve.

If you would like to volunteer to help teach financial skills to people in need, please get in touch with us at Foodshare.
