A different kind of lunch break

Foodshare's Administrative Professionals Team has a variety of important responsibilities to keep our work to end hunger running along smoothly.  But one function you may not have thought of for a group like this is our "Spirit Committee."  Each quarter, three members of the staff take on the responsibility of providing some opportunities for Foodshare employees and volunteers to take a few minutes out for some team-building and fun.

After all, while our offiical motto is "When hunger stops, so will we," our unofficial motto is "We take our cause very seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously."

Today, the Spirit Committee planned a lunchtime cookout.  Of course, shortly before noon, it started to rain, but lucky for us, Foodshare has a nice awning on the front of the warehouse where we could both grill the burgers and dogs and hang out to eat on our blankets and lawn chairs.

Our lunch breaks are usually staggered, in part because there is not enough room in the break room for all of us!  So it was certainly nice to have everyone gathered together today to share a little late summer fun with burgers, hot dogs, and watermelon.

After the lunch, I received this note from one employee:

A quick thank you for allowing this session of the Spirit Committee to finish our term with such a positive event.  It was an easy way to involve everyone – I don’t think I’ve ever seen some of the guys come out of the back of the warehouse other than to take agency orders to their vehicles!  All seemed to enjoy the cookout.  Even the passing shower couldn’t dampen our good time.

Thank you to everyone at Foodshare who pitched in and made this brief break from our important work possible!
