A Community United Against Hunger

The Foodshare Walk Against Hunger is this Sunday, May 7. Rain or shine, this is our chance to tell the world that hunger is not okay.

It is not okay for a senior, who worked for decades, to be standing in line at a food pantry. It is not okay for members of our military to be worried about putting dinner on the table each night. And it is not okay for children, through no fault of their own, to be hungry when they head off to school.

We are so grateful to have some of our favorite, and most committed local celebs kicking things off on the main stage—Scot Haney from WFSB Channel 3 Eyewitness News and Renee DiNino from iHeart Media's Community Access. Long-time supporters of Foodshare, they both understand the hard road ahead, but they also know the strength of a community united against hunger.

Hunger is indeed big.
We believe the Foodshare community is bigger.

Hands On Hartford, a Foodshare partner, recently hosted an open house to promote participation in the 34th Annual Foodshare Walk Against Hunger.

Al Marino, our Fundraising Events Specialist, spoke with guests--including board members, supporters, and clients--about Foodshare's work in the Greater Hartford community, and the importance of taking part in our Walk.

As one of our largest fundraisers of the year, this event supports the ongoing work of Foodshare and our 300 program partners, to increase access to healthy food, while providing longer-term support for our neighbors who are struggling with hunger.

Benefiting Agencies Received a Walkthrough

We recently welcomed our Walk benefiting agencies to the Bloomfield facility for a Foodshare Walk Against Hunger orientation, hosted by Al Marino, our Fundraising Events Specialist.

Attendees received information about Walk day, how to recruit and manage their own teams, and tips on fundraising that will benefit their own programs.

All dollars raised through the Foodshare Walk Against Hunger will benefit the regional food bank and our strong network of 300 partners. Twenty-four of these partners, who signed up in advance, will receive a percentage of the proceeds raised by each walker who designates their organization as the beneficiary.

Register online today at FoodshareWalk.org and help support a program near you!

A Little Rain Couldn't Dampen Our Spirits

Despite a steady rain, thousands of walkers made their way to downtown Hartford on Sunday, May 1 to show their commitment to our hungry neighbors in Greater Hartford. Foodshare President & CEO, James Arena-DeRosa, said it best when he shared his own story from the stage. “As I looked out my window on Sunday, getting ready for my first ‘Walk’ in Hartford, I was disappointed—it was overcast, rainy, and cold. But then I thought about Francis, a man I recently met who happens to be blind, and who walks each day with his service dog to the local food pantry. Almost a mile this man walks—in rain, in snow, in cold—because he is hungry and because he can’t afford bus fare.”

While dollars from the 33rd Annual Foodshare Walk Against Hunger are still being counted, walkers have so far raised $564,284—including a $30,000 match from The Chase Family Foundations. This money will secure healthy food for people like Francis, who struggle to put food on the table.

Check out all of our Walk photos online

Local celebrities, including Brad Davis from WDRC’s Talk of Connecticut, Chaz from 102.9 The Whale and Kim Lucey from WFSB, were all there to support the effort and get walkers energized. The rain did not dampen spirits, and while many people sported orange ponchos—distributed by Foodshare—you could still make out team shirts from groups like CCSU, Grace Lutheran Church and Cognizant. And of course, hundreds of employees from The Hartford swathed the park in sea of blue.

Teams or walkers who have not yet turned in their pledges are urged to do so right away. Foodshare is still accepting donations, online at FoodshareWalk.org or by mail. And thanks to the generosity of event sponsors like The Hartford and Stop & Shop, every dollar raised will increase access to healthy food for children, seniors and working-poor families across the region, ensuring a stronger and healthier community for us all.

Guest Blogger: The Hartford

As Presenting Sponsor of the Foodshare Walk Against Hunger, The Hartford provides support in a myriad of ways--monetary donations, volunteers, a physical location for hosting the event on Walk day. Despite the weight of those contributions, we are continually amazed by the passion and enthusiasm Hartford employees share for our mission of solving hunger in Greater Hartford.

We recently invited them to attend our Hunger Action Team Symposium and, following the event they shared this beautiful sentiment on their employee blog:

Feeding Growing Bodies and Minds

C&S Wholesale Grocers has helped us ensure more children throughout Greater Hartford have access to the nutritious food they need to learn and grow. Through a two-year Child Hunger grant, C&S Wholesale Grocers has helped Foodshare distribute food to children and families served by backpack and school pantry programs in communities around Suffield and Windsor Locks. In addition to this generous grant support, C&S donated enough food to generate over 400,000 meals, with nearly a quarter being fresh produce!

And then there's in-kind support...

Napkins, plates, cutlery and more, provided by C&S Wholesale Grocers helped local partners provide meals to children across the region while school was out. The company generously donated water for 4,800 walkers participating in the last year's Foodshare Walk Against Hunger. And having the “C&S Turkey Reefer” here during the month of November was a huge help in acquiring and distributing over 16,000 turkeys in a two week period. And then there are the incredible staff members at C&S Wholesale Grocers who, collectively, dedicated over 300 volunteer hours last year.

We cannot thank them enough for their never-ending generosity...what a difference it makes!

Hunger Action Teams Walk Against Hunger!

In 2014, a local Hunger Action Team (HAT) member from Vernon asked, "Can a HAT start a Walk Team?"

We had a modest goal of raising $500, which we exceeded, and 8 walkers wearing custom t-shirts participated.

Fast forward to 2015, when four Hunger Action Walk Teams raised nearly $7,000!

The following Hunger Action Teams are participating in this year's Foodshare Walk Against Hunger with a goal of raising nearly $10,000:
  • Andover, Columbia, Hebron, Marlborough (ACHM) - Captain Patti Buell
  • East Hartford - Captain Julieth Callejas
  • East Windsor - Captain Peter Stagon
  • Tri-Town (Ellington, Tolland, Vernon) - Captain Michelle Hill
  • Wethersfield Captain - Andrew Adil
Thank you to all the Hunger Action Teams for your support! Learn more about the Foodshare Walk Against Hunger >

We can transform Greater Hartford, one meal at a time!

Registration for the 33rd Annual Foodshare Walk Against Hunger is now open, and this year walkers are being asked to raise $630,000 to benefit our hungry neighbors. Thanks to sponsors like The Hartford, every dollar will provide immediate relief for those struggling to put food on the table, while also supporting connections to build a better tomorrow.

“Real change requires more than words—it takes compassion, a genuine deep exchange of ideas, and an unwavering commitment to action,” says James Arena-DeRosa, Foodshare President & CEO. “The Foodshare Walk Against Hunger is about starting the conversation, bringing new and different voices to the table, and providing a platform for anti-hunger advocates to share their passion with the community.”

Hunger is a way of life for 1 in 8 Greater Hartford residents, but it doesn’t have to be. The food bank wants you at the table for this fight to ensure equal access to food and adequate nutrition for every person in Greater Hartford. Register online at FoodshareWalk.org, and take part in the walk on Sunday, May 1. You can become a part of the movement that makes hunger history.

Ice Cream Social at the State Capitol

Foodshare President James Arena-DeRosa joined several State Legislators and Foodshare e-Advocates for ice cream and a discussion on the topic of hunger in our state. James stressed the need for finding new and innovative ways to solve the problems facing state residents, particularly strong food policy.

Also joining the event were allies in the fight against hunger from the Department of Social Services, Department of Agriculture, Jewish Federation Association of CT, African-American Affairs Commission and End Hunger CT!

Arena-DeRosa was introduced by State Representative Brian Becker. Brian has been actively involved with Foodshare for 25 years as a Board member, co-captain of the legislative Walk Against Hunger team and a strong champion for getting federal SNAP dollars earmarked for CT to residents who qualify.

Walking Together for the Common Good

The diversity of participants taking part in Sunday’s Foodshare Walk Against Hunger makes a very important point – hunger does not discriminate. Thousands of people of all ages, races and religions, gathered at Hartbeat Park – owned by Presenting Sponsor, The Hartford – to speak out against this issue affecting more than 137,000 of our closest friends and neighbors. The dollars are still being counted, but so far walkers have raised $530,478 to fight hunger.

We are so grateful to groups like The Hartford, who engage hundreds of employees in this one event. This year, their team alone raised $210,000 in support of Foodshare, including a $20,000 sponsorship! And then there’s the grassroots effort happening – small businesses, schools, civic and faith groups – all coming together for the common good. The Chase Challenge, issued by the Chase Family Foundation, provided an additional match to the first 50 Walkers who raised more than $600 benefiting Foodshare, a $30,000 boost!

We have until month’s end before we have to close the books on this important fundraiser. That means there is still plenty of time to show your support. Every extra dollar means three more meals for one of our hungry neighbors. Those wishing to make a donation in support of Foodshare, or a registered Walker, may do so by clicking the button below, or by calling 860-286-9999. Any teams or walkers who have not yet turned in their pledges should do so right away.

Harnessing the Power of Partnerships

We had a wonderful visit from Amanda Aronson last week, and through that discussion she came away with this beautifully written piece about our work to Solve Hunger:

Foodshare: Harnessing The Power of Partnerships
March 25, 2015 ~ Aronson Consulting, LLC

Many of us know Foodshare for their Turkey and Thirty campaign or their Walk Against Hunger, but have you ever stopped to realize just how many partnerships they maintain throughout our community? I know I hadn’t–until the day I asked the dish washer at the House of Bread about the daily rhythm of their soup kitchen. His response was peppered with recognizable names of organizations, companies and houses of worship, all contributing in some way to the mission of House of Bread. And from his perspective, a vital component of their work begins at Foodshare. Read More...

Many thanks to Amanda for supporting our work, and for sharing it with the Greater Hartford community!

Right on, Target!

The wonderful staff and management at Target South Windsor gathered to receive accolades and a giant thank you sign for all they do to support Foodshare and their community in the fight to solve hunger.

This group makes it a priority to donate food and non-food items that would otherwise be thrown into dumpsters. Because of their commitment, this store donated an impressive 51,407 meals worth of food in 2014. In addition to the generous food donations, Target also volunteers for Foodshare by sending groups to sort food items at our Bloomfield facility and at the Regional Market, and last year sent a very large group to volunteer at the Foodshare Walk Against Hunger. Looking forward to another year of this fantastic partnership with Target!
