The Mobile Foodshare site at the Charter Oak Health Center in Hartford served 274 people on August 13. On Monday of this week, they served 426 people! And, of course, this from a truck that we think can hold about enough food for 200 people, meaning that every person in line gets less food.
As Foodshare driver Alan always tells me, we need these lines to get shorter, not longer!
What would it take to make the lines shorter? In the long-term, economic recovery and jobs that pay living wages are the answer. In the short-term, getting eligible people enrolled in programs like SNAP is part of the answer.
