Today, the USDA released new food security research and the numbers don't look good. Connecticut ranks 44th in the nation, with Arkansas and Mississippi tying for the highest percentage of food insecure residents and North Dakota having the smallest percentage of people living with food insecurity.
My immediate thought was that there is no way that should be the case! A wealthy state like Connecticut should be ensuring that all of our residents have enough to eat. And no disrespect to North Dakota, which is a lovely state, but we should be doing better!
Even more frightening when I looked into the numbers - when USDA measured "very low food security," the people who are truly going hungry, the picture was bleaker and now Connecticut was in 38th place in the country.
Have a look at the research for yourself here.
