Food companies donate to support disaster relief

The food industry provides most of the support to local food banks, like Foodshare, all year long.  And when disaster strikes, the food industry steps in again.  I received this message today from C & S Wholesale Grocers:

"The eyes of the nation have watched Hurricane Sandy come and go, though the aftermath of the storm upon families and communities remains serious. As of this afternoon millions of people remain without electricity up and down the eastern seaboard, homes have been destroyed, public transportation has ceased, and streets are flooded.

"To take action and to help others in need, C&S Wholesale Grocers is again working in partnership with Feeding America, the country's largest hunger relief organization and one of our strategic nonprofit partners. Feeding America is part of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (www.NVOAD.org) and in turn works collaboratively with groups such as the American Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army, Humane Society of the United States, plus faith-based organizations, professional organizations including the American Logistics Aid Association, and state and federal government.

"In the next 24-48 hours, C&S will be staging two truckloads of food -- approximately 100K pounds -- for donation to Feeding America member food banks in areas hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. One will head to the Connecticut Food Bank (www.ctfoodbank.org) in East Haven, Conn.; they support 600 emergency food agencies in six counties. The other will go to City Harvest (www.cityharvest.org) in New York City; they have operated for more than 30 years and supply 600 agencies.

"The items C&S will donate have been specifically requested by Feeding America and include bottled water, soup, peanut butter, granola and power bars, chili, beef stew, diapers, and cleaning products.

"Thank you, and please join in our thoughts for the families impacted by the storm, especially for the first responders who have been rushing to provide aid and safety."
