Washington, D.C. – December 20, 2012 – Today is a day of contrasts. New data (pdf) from the U.S. Conference of Mayors show an increase in demand for emergency food assistance in cities across the nation, yet the U.S. House of Representatives has scheduled tonight a vote for a bill that would slash funding for vital safety net programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Seventy-five percent of Americans oppose cuts to SNAP, yet some in Congress keep putting cuts to SNAP on the table.
In the face of record need, such attempts to shred the safety net are callous. As budget negotiations continue, FRAC urges President Obama to stand firm against any cuts to SNAP. It is time for Members of Congress to listen to their constituents and start addressing hunger in a meaningful way.
