GRAB AND GO BREAKFAST IN TOLLAND

Tolland Middle School will begin offering “grab-and-go” breakfast to students, available in the cafeteria between 7:30 and 7:58 a.m., beginning this month. Breakfast will cost $1.50 for all paid students and will be free for all students eligible for free or reduced price meals. Tolland schools superintendent William Guzman said the pilot was spurred because students, particularly at the secondary school level, complained of stomachaches and headaches in morning nurse’s office visits, likely caused by their missing breakfast. Connecticut’s low school breakfast participation costs the state an estimated $22 million in federal reimbursements, based on 2010 participation numbers; Tolland district’s portion of those reimbursements is $74,000.
