INCOME DROPS, POVERTY RISES IN CONNECTICUT

Statewide median household income in 2011 decreased from $71,473 in 2006-2008 to $67,427 in 2009-2011, after adjusting for inflation. While the biggest drops fell elsewhere, in North Central Connecticut, the median Enfield household lost about $7,000. The percent of all Connecticut residents in poverty increased from 8.5% in 2006-2008 to 10.1% in 2009-2011, while the percent of children under 18 statewide in poverty increased from 11.5%.  A new report from CT Voices for Children gives town-by-town data:  West Hartford experienced a 2 percentage point rise in overall poverty (from 4.9% to 6.9%) and a whopping 4.5 percentage point rise in child poverty (from 2.7% to 7.4%); Vernon’s child poverty rate rose from 9.2% to 17.5%.
