Foodshare provided funding of $760.50 to United Methodist Church of Hartford at 571 Farmington Avenue to pilot an idea for purchasing carts to help clients of Mobile Foodshare transport the 20 -30 pounds of fresh produce they receive at each distribution:
UMC’s Mobile Foodshare site distributes every other Monday. In an effort to promote a real sense of ownership, rather than just a give-away, carts were provided to 42 clients, each of whom paid $7 for their cart. Foodshare covered the balance of the cost, $11.70 per cart, and Pfau’s Hardware at 982 Farmington Avenue in West Hartford assembled the carts at no charge and also covered freight. Volunteers at UMC picked up the carts from Pfau’s to bring them back to UMC. Approximately 20 carts are leftover and Foodshare will consider how these can be provided to other interested clients of Mobile Foodshare.
Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Siegel who conceived of and coordinated this project from the beginning and paid $7 each for the leftover carts; Pfau’s Hardware; United Methodist Church and its volunteers; and Norma Burton, Site Coordinator for the UMC Mobile Foodshare as well as for their food pantry.
