Massachusetts proposes food waste ban

The State of Massachusetts is considering a new way to handle the large volume of food waste that currently goes to landfills or incinerators - some estimate that 20-25% of the waste going to these facilities is food or other organic matter.

The state's Department of Environmental Protection has proposed a plan that would require any business that generates more than one ton of food waste per week to either donate the food or, for food not fit for human consumption, to dispose of it via composting or other environmentally friendly means.
