The Windsor Hunger Action Team has been trying to get a summer food program going for the kids in town for a couple of years and we finally have it! Starting today, the Windsor school food service will be providing lunch at 11:30 each weekday at Chateau Woods and Deerfield apartments. The lunches are free for children under 18 and paid for by the federal Summer Food Service Program. In addition, End Hunger CT! has provided a grant to allow them to provide meals to any parents who come with their children, which cannot be paid for with the federal funds.
Getting this going has been a great example of collaboration – the school food service, Foodshare and the Hunger Action Team, the Windsor Chamber of Commerce, and End Hunger CT!
There are a variety of ways for people to find out about summer food sites, but the coolest one has to be the texting option. This is done by texting “CTmeals” to 877-877. After providing an address, a list of nearby sites will be sent back.
Volunteers are still needed to help with this program!
