FOOD INSECURITY AMONG CHILDREN

Household and child food insecurity increased over the course of the recession, the Urban Institute reports in a recent examination of economic insecurity among children. Between 2007 and 2010, the share of children living in food-insecure households increased from 13% to 22%. The share of children who were food insecure increased from 7% to 11%. While household and child food insecurity increased for all groups, the impact was greatest for children in families with low educational attainment and for blacks and Hispanics. The share of children living in food-insecure households rose about 12 percentage points among those whose parents had less than an associate’s degree compared with 5 percentage points among those with a master’s degree or higher. The share of black children living in food-insecure households increased 16 percentage points, and the share of Hispanic children increased by 13 percentage points; among whites the increase was just 5 percentage points.
