Insufficiency

Yesterday, I wrote about Janet Poppendieck's book, "Sweet Charity," and specifically, her chapter called "The Seven Deadly In's of Emergency Food."

Insufficiency, or just not enough food flowing through the food banks, food pantries, and community kitchens was one of those "deadly in's."

Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap research tells you just how insufficient the food supply is!  Here in Hartford and Tolland Counties, the region that Foodshare serves, it would take an additional $64 million worth of food each year just to fill the existing gap and meet people's needs.  This compares to about $22 million worth of food that Foodshare currently distributes each year.

There is not enough food, enough money, or enough volunteers for Foodshare to fill that gap, or at least not with our current business model!

What does this mean?  Despite all that we do, people are still going hungry or having inadequate diets for a healthy life.

But, Foodshare has a plan, "Bridging the Gap," to try to close this gap by both bringing in more food and reducing the need for food assistance.  Check it out here and let me know what you think!
