THOUSANDS IN CONNECTICUT RELY ON SNAP

Nearly 359,764 Connecticut residents (or 215,393 households) received SNAP benefits in July 2013, representing r one in nine residents, says Lucy Nolan, executive director of End Hunger CT!.  The program works as it is intended – “to help people get through life’s hurdles knowing that there is food available.” Working families, children, the elderly and disabled comprise major portions of recipient numbers, and their benefits help them free up funds for necessities, while also lifting many out of extreme poverty.  Shockingly, 77% of Connecticut’s Food Stamp households have incomes below the poverty line, and 37% live in deep poverty.
