Food banks, diet, and public health

Foodshare, and the other food banks in the Feeding America network, have developed an increased focus on the relationship between food and health in recent years.  We know that many health issues are complicated by poor diets and so it makes sense that food banks should help low-income people have healthier diets than they could otherwise afford.  In doing this, we may be able to curb some of these public health problems that are influenced by diet.

Foodshare's focus has been on distributing fresh fruits and vegetables and today we are closing in on half of our total distribution being fresh produce!  How much healthier would we all be if half of our diet was made up of fresh produce!

In keeping with this new focus, Feeding America has launched a new Healthy Food Bank Hub website.
