SNAP recipients affected by the November 1 benefit cuts will look to food banks for help, but these food banks are already overstretched in trying to meet the needs of struggling families in the wake of the recession. “I thought we were busy now; I don’t know what it will be like [after the cuts], because all those people getting cut will definitely be accessing a pantry,” said Swami Durga Das, manager of the River Fund Food Pantry in New York City, the city’s largest. Benefits amount to $1 per person per meal for a city SNAP family, and when the benefits run out before the month is over, the family visits the pantry to make up the difference.
