SNAP HELPS VETERANS
Over 10,000 Connecticut veterans lived in households receiving SNAP benefits between 2009 and 2011. Nationwide, in any given month in 2011, around 900,000 veterans lived in households that relied on SNAP to provide food for their families. Veterans who participate in SNAP tend to be young, but their ages range widely: 57% of veterans are under age 30, while 9% are age 60 or older. They served during many conflicts, including Iraq and Afghanistan, Vietnam, and in some cases, Korea and World War II, as well as in peacetime. For low-income veterans who may be unemployed, working in low-wage jobs, or disabled, SNAP provides an essential support that enables them to purchase nutritious food for their families.
