A year later, his briliant idea has come to fruition. Foodshare and Lincoln Financial come together today to launch a new recurring-gift program - the Turkey Club - allowing people to donate monthly to Foodshare to make sure hungry neighbors have food year-round and a turkey next season for the holidays. Each year, Foodshare struggles to keep up with the need for funds to feed people throughout the year, in addition to the growing demand for holiday turkeys. Lincoln Financial provided $30,000 to support the launch of Foodshare’s Turkey Club, in the hopes that other businesses and individuals will join them to help those in need. The launch of the Turkey Club coincides with #GivingTuesday, a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.
Through this new Turkey Club promotion, Foodshare hopes to ensure that people have enough food to eat throughout the year, not just at Thanksgiving, but we also want to help avoid the last minute challenge of not having enough turkeys.
For a relatively small amount of money each month, you can have a very large impact on hunger in your community. Only $44/month will provide turkeys for 12 families next Thanksgiving, and enough food for a hungry neighbor all year long. Foodshare hopes the Turkey Club will help the organization with a steady stream of funding in order to feed people year-round. Anyone who becomes a charter member of Foodshare’s Turkey Club by the first of the year will receive a personal tour of the Bloomfield facility given by Foodshare President Gloria McAdam.
“While hungry people are most in our thoughts during the holiday season, food insecurity exists year-round,” said Marlene Ferreira, Lincoln Financial Foundation Hartford program officer. “Lincoln Foundation hopes that other businesses and individuals in the community will join us in ensuring that there is food for the hungry in Hartford 365 days a year.”
