CONNECTICUT WORKS TO INCREASE SUMMER MEALS

More than 75 volunteers canvassed several New Haven neighborhoods recently, distributing information on the free summer meals program. Organized by the New Haven Food Policy Council, New Haven Public Schools, and End Hunger CT!, the volunteers were participating in an event titled “Summer Blitz” which aims to increase the number of children in the area receiving free summer meals. For every 10 New Haven children qualifying for free school meals, only four received free summer meals last year. Many public officials and organization representatives were on hand to inspire the volunteers, including Congresswoman Rosa De Lauro, Governor Daniel Malloy, and Lucy Nolan, executive director of End Hunger CT! The speakers stressed the importance of summer nutrition and its role in maintaining good academic performance when kids return to school in the fall.
