SNAP RECIPIENTS GET DOUBLE AT FARMERS’ MARKETS

Over the past few years, farmers’ markets in Oregon have been offering SNAP recipients matching dollars, which helps them afford more healthy food when using their benefits at the markets.  Wholesome Wave reports that 90% of program participants nationwide in 2012 said they increased their consumption of fruits and vegetables through the program’s assistance.  Farmers’ market incentive programs not only help SNAP recipients eat healthier; they also help support local farmers. In Western New York this year, three community foundations will help support seven regional farmers’ markets offer SNAP recipients bonuses when using their benefits at the farm stands.
