FOOD INSECURITY: CAUSE OR RESULT?

Mark Nord spent the last 19 years working on food security and poverty-related research at the USDA’s Economic Research Service. He believes it's important to recognize that food insecurity doesn't occur by itself. Anytime that there's food insecurity, a lot of other types of material hardships are probably also going on in the household, such as bad housing, a bad neighborhood, or bad health. It is not always clear whether those outcomes are caused by food insecurity or whether food insecurity is a result of those co-existing conditions. If, he says, you want to know to what extent outcomes can be improved just by improving food security, then you need to sort out the causal connections carefully. If the real problem is housing, healthcare, or the neighborhood, and you try to solve it with food, you may only be partially successful in reducing food insecurity.
