Yesterday we had a special lunch and learn for National
American Indian Heritage Month. Justin Scott from the Mohegan Tribe gave the
staff a fascinating tour of Mohegan culture and tradition, including singing,
drumming, flute playing, Mohegan language, and a very wide range of crafts and
arts, as well as legends, stories, and spiritual practices. (Here’s a handy tip
for your next art project: mix your pigment with bear grease instead of water,
and the color will last for decades. And if you want your deerskin leather to
remain soft in all weathers, be sure to soak it in deer brains when you are
tanning it.) The presentation was organized
by Reclamation Coordinator Eric Coleman and was enthusiastically received by
the staff members there.
