Hunger Action Teams (HATs) are hard at work all over Central Connecticut but one group has had great success in actively recruiting youth to become a part of the conversation. In East Hartford, students are all about "getting their hands dirty" through the expansion of school community gardens -- a concept first modeled by the Goodwin School. The produce is given to students of the school, and is also used by the summer meals program (serving children from lower-income families).
The most exciting part of this entire project is the involvement of East Hartford High School students who have made an appearance at a recent East Hartford HAT meeting, eager to be involved. Together, the group is brainstorming many new initiatives, including a paid summer employment program for at-risk youth. While Hunger Action Teams are open to anyone interested in fighting hunger, very few have managed to bring youth to the table as active participants. Way to go East Hartford!
