The Internet Welcomes SNAP Shoppers

The USDA recently announced that SNAP participants will have the option to purchase food items online. Beginning this summer, the two-year pilot program will be offered in seven states to SNAP participants that reside in both urban and suburban communities.

Retailers chosen for the pilot-program include; Amazon, FreshDirect, Safeway, ShopRite, Hy-Vee, Hart’s Local Grocers, and Dash’s Market. These retailers were chosen based on their representation of various store types and regional networks.

USDA's Secretary Tom Vilsack made the following statement in regards to the program:

“Online purchasing is a potential lifeline for SNAP participants living in urban neighborhoods and rural communities where access to healthy food choices can be limited,”We’re looking forward to being able to bring the benefits of the online market to low-income Americans participating in SNAP.”
