CT Legislation Considers Food Stamp Bills

Several bills dealing with SNAP requirements have been proposed for the General Assembly’s consideration. Four bills, would eliminate waivers from SNAP work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents who are not otherwise except under federal law.

They are: HB 5268, proposed by Rep. Tami Zawistowski (R-East Granby), HB 5126, proposed by Rep. Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott), HB 6188, proposed by Rosa Rembibas (R-Naugatuck), and SB 221 proposed by Sen. Tim Larson (D-East Hartford).

All of these bills were referred to the Human Services Committee, but no further action on them has been taken. A proposal by Rep. Eric Berthel (R-Watertown), would ban drug felons from receiving SNAP benefits for five years after their convictions. It too was sent to the Human Services Committee, which has taken no action on it to date.
