Five misconceptions about poverty in the US

I urge you to have a look at this opinion piece by the Reverend David Beckman of Bread for the World on the CNN Religion Blogs.

He lists the following misconceptions about poverty and presents information to refute these ideas:
  1. Poverty doesn't exist in the US.
  2. There is no such thing as extreme poverty in the US.
  3. If you live above the federal poverty line, you are doing just fine.
  4. These so-called safety net programs cost American taxpayers money when we need to be focused on balancing our budget.
  5. Fifty percent of all Americans do not pay taxes.
Interesting information and opinions, including the views of those who have commented on his essay.
