Upcoming SNAP screening in supermarkets

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company has joined the fight against hunger in partnership with Foodshare and will be hosting events at grocery store locations throughout greater Hartford to help customers access the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit. Formerly known as the food stamp program, SNAP provides eligible households with a monthly benefit to help purchase much-needed food.

In Connecticut only about 70 percent of those who are eligible actually receive the benefit. This means roughly 200,000 people in the state qualify but have not applied. This can be attributed to a variety of challenges including language barriers, lack of transportation or, in some circumstances, no knowledge of the program’s existence.  Foodshare’s SNAP outreach program, in partnership with End Hunger CT! is dedicated to increasing SNAP participation rates throughout the state by assisting in the application process and ensuring that benefits are accessed in a timely and efficient manner.

Foodshare volunteers will be available at the dates, times and locations listed below. Volunteers will answer questions about SNAP, screen for eligibility and assist with the application process.

If you plan to attend one of the events please bring copies of the following materials:

-photo ID
-birth certificates for others in the household
-lease or mortgage statement
-proof of income (months worth)
-out of pocket medical expenses if over the age of 60 or disabled
