Winter energy assistance - appointments are already filled!

Since winter heating costs and food insecurity are so often related, I thought I would share this rather frightening update about energy assistance for the coming heating season...

The Connecticut Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) provides low income families with help in meeting their winter heating bills. Through CEAP, eligible households may secure fuel deliveries and have their utility heating costs defrayed. Applications for the CEAP program are generally accepted from August through April.

CRT, who serves as the CEAP administrator for the Hartford and Middletown area, has informed 2-1-1 that they are completely booked until March and are not taking any more appointments for energy assistance at their Hartford area locations!

For agencies outside of the Hartford area, a listing of Community Action Agencies that administer the CEAP funds locally can be found at http://www.211ct.org/.  Individuals who are completely out of deliverable fuel can walk into their local Energy Assistance site to apply as an emergency case starting November 15, with the understanding that they will probably be at the office all day. In some cases individuals may contact their local office to obtain an appointment (unless the site is already full). This might help prioritize their application; however, no deliveries will be made until November 15th.

Additional questions regarding Energy Assistance can be directed to 2-1-1.
