A new food industry donor

Food Donations Manager Ernie Pitti is constantly on the road, meeting with food companies in the Hartford area, both soliciting them and thanking them for their support of Foodshare's work to end hunger.  Ernie sent me this note today about a recent meeting:

"Early last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Bruce Weed, the warehouse manager, at Vermont Bread’s satellite warehouse in South Windsor.  As the warehouse manager, Bruce has the responsibility for all the inventory that crosses his dock and resides in the warehouse.  Faced with the knowledge that some of the product he had in inventory would not be salable shortly, he decided to donate these bakery products rather than destroy them.  This was a huge step for the company and a great opportunity for Foodshare.  Despite the fact that Vermont Bread has had a long and celebrated history in New England (since 1978), the company has never participated in a food recovery program of any type with Foodshare!  So on October 5th, because of Bruce’s concern for the plight of the many food insecure people in the region that he had been reading and hearing about, Vermont Bread became a Foodshare supporter with a donation of almost 4,500 pounds of bread.

"Vermont Bread has had a long tradition of baking all natural breads and baked goods from scratch recipes.  Their USDA Certified Organic breads go beyond their all natural guarantee with ingredients produced in strict compliance with national organic standards.

"Thank you Vermont Bread and thank you Bruce Weed for taking that very important first step towards helping all of our food insecure neighbors."
