As I am sitting in front of my computer late today, finalizing the budget package to go to the Foodshare Board of Directors for next week's meeting, I find myself thinking about this very technology I am using.
The electronic infrastructure needed to operate a successful business today is so important. Our for profit businesses recognize this and make the proper investments in hardware, software, and training. But what I was wondering is why it's so hard for non-profit organizations and our government to do the same.
I think Foodshare does a reasonably good job with technology, but I know some people will want to pick apart the technology budget for the coming year. And donors might say, "I don't want my money going to buy new computers," even if those computers meant more efficient distribution of food to people in need.
I know for certain that the State of Connecticut Department of Social Services, the folks who process SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program) applications have a long ways to go - they are using technology created in the 1970's! But like some donors, some taxpayers would say "I don't want to pay for that," even though it would make the workers more efficient.
Just some thoughts late on a Thursday...guess I should go home now!
