POVERTY IN CONNECTICUT INCREASES, INCOME DECLINES



Nearly 10% (9.5%) of all Connecticut residents lived in poverty in the period 2007-2011, up from 7.9% in 2000, according to Connecticut Voices for Children in a new report that compares findings from the Census Bureau’s most recent American Community Survey (ACS) with figures from the 2000 census. The percent of related children under age 18 in poverty increased to 12.6% in the ACS, up from 10.4% in 2000, while the percent of residents under 200% of the Federal Poverty Level increased to 21.6% in 2007-2011, up from 19.3% in 2000. Finally, after adjusting for inflation, the statewide median household income decreased to $69,243 in 2007-2011, down from $70,593 in 2000.
