SNAP use at the city’s greenmarkets increased 30% over the past year, according to a report from the New York City Council; EBT card sales rose from $638,140 in 2011 to $831,601 in 2012. Some markets saw SNAP, WIC farmers’ market coupon, and Health Bucks voucher use increase by 65%. The city’s Greenmarket EBT initiative success “is proof that all New Yorkers will purchase healthy food when given the opportunity,” said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. The program is a win-win situation for SNAP participants, who get increased access to healthy food, and for local farmers who supply the markets.
