Big Y donates corned beef

Today, Big Y World Class Markets donated 133 cases of Buckley Farms Round Cut Corned Beef to Foodshare just in time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.  These cases include about 1,300 packages of corned beef and will allow many to have a chance to share in the traditional food associated with St. Patrick’s Day.

Big Y has a history of donating to food banks.  According to Charles L. D’Amour , “We support our local food banks daily with donations of both food and transportation services.  Being able to share a little ‘luck o’ the Irish’ with corned beef will help many to enjoy a traditional St. Patrick’s Day celebration.”

Just over a week ago, Big Y donated a trailer load of product as a result of a water problem and Foodshare staff and volunteers were able to salvage most of it.  When Claire D’Amour Daley called about the corned beef donation, she said, “Your team is fabulous!”  She said that everyone at Big Y, from the store level through the delivery drivers, really appreciates the can-do attitude of everyone at Foodshare.  She was particularly impressed with our acceptance of the water damaged product and how we made it happen.  She said the message she heard was along the lines of, “yes, we’ll take it and we’ll figure it out.”  They were pleased that the product didn’t end up discarded.  I told her we had figured it out and that we were thrilled with the product and the chance to be able to save it and get it out to people who need it.

Headquartered in Springfield, MA, Big Y is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England.  Proud to be family owned and operated, they currently operate 61 locations throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 10,000 employees. Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D’Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a “Y”.
