While a military career once meant middle class comfort, active duty men and women are now struggling to make ends meet. Food stamp usage among military commissaries has quadrupled since 2007. An army private with 1 to 2 years of experience will make about $40,000 a year with food and clothing allowances. However, military spouses aged from 18-24 have a 30% unemployment rate and much higher credit card debt than ordinary civilians. Over $103 million in food assistance has been provided to hungry military families. According to the Defense Commissary Agency, a family of four can save $4,400 annually by shopping at commissaries, where products are about one-third less then commercial prices. But despite this huge advantage many military families still struggle to purchase nutritious food.
