FIGHTING SENIOR HUNGER
Nearly 25% of Arkansas seniors are food insecure, the highest rate in the nation. The Arkansas Foodbank is addressing this situation with a pilot program run through 15 senior service sites located across 13 counties. The Foodbank plans to provide approximately 1,500 seniors with senior-specific food items each month. The foods are provided in prepackaged boxes that consist of single serve heat-and-eat meals, along with breakfast items, shelf-stable milk, and juice. The 15 agencies can choose from among a range of implementation strategies according to which they feel best fit the needs of their community. The strategies include SNAP outreach, nutrition education, and buddy delivery systems.
