NYC FOOD STORES FEEL SNAP CUTS
SNAP benefits provided The Gristedes supermarket chain, with 32 stores in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Westchester County, made about $109,000 in SNAP sales in the first week of January 2013. In the first week of January 2014, after the SNAP benefit cut took effect, SNAP-related sales dropped to $90,000. Smaller stores across the city are feeling the effects even more. Ramon Murphy, owner of Red Apple Deli Supermarket in Manhattan, had to let two employees go in January as the SNAP cuts caused a decrease in sales. The SNAP benefit cut decreased assistance by an average of $30 to $50 a month for the one million participating households in the city, and is affecting local economies.
