CONNECTICUT RESIDENT SEES AMERICA IN SNAP LINE
Dennis Powers entered the Social Services office in Waterbury to apply for SNAP and found the 50 people in the office were “mothers with children…middle age couples, young men and women…some in work clothing – guard uniforms, medical scrubs, fast food outfits, business suit and tie.” These people could be his friends and neighbors, he writes. “They were working people, just like me, who just needed some help. This was a shocking reminder of what has become of the middle class.” His case manager said she was seeing a lot of people just like him. Receiving an EBT card with $178 a month in SNAP benefits “was a constant reminder of my situation and on the other hand a relief that I would no longer need to decide whether to purchase food or medicine.”
