In The Spotlight: C & S Wholesale Grocers

C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. has been a mission partner to Feeding America since 1994 and supports two dozen member food banks with donations of food and funds. Since 1999 when C&S began regularly donating to Foodshare, they have given almost 3 million pounds of food!

The company supports initiatives to end hunger as well as promote the health and enrichment of communities that are home to its thousands of employees. And, because Foodshare’s work to provide both short and long term solutions to end hunger aligns with their corporate mission, C&S has awarded Foodshare $125,000 in grant money since 2002.

Even though C&S is the nation’s largest grocery distributor, they are deeply committed to the greater Hartford community in a number of ways, operating two warehouses in Connecticut where it employs approximately 700 men and women. “Making a difference for families and children who are living in poverty, or who find themselves now on the edges of poverty, is something that C&S Wholesale Grocers feels compelled to do,” according to Gina Goff, Director of Community Involvement at C&S. “Our company and employees take seriously being a catalyst for change, especially on issues of childhood hunger.”

In 2010, employees volunteered at Foodshare’s regional market sorting produce and also worked the turkey tent during our annual Thanksgiving campaign. Donating turkeys each year during Turkey and a Twenty is yet another way that C&S continues to support our work. This year many employees chose to donate their own turkeys. Together, these efforts resulted in 340 turkeys!

Gina says, “Our corporate social responsibility strategic plan developed in 2008 [has] helped C&S re-define its community commitment, building a values-based company, engaging employees to take action on behalf of others, investing in local community groups, and leveraging our strategic nonprofit partnerships to drive change nationally.”
