Target supports Foodshare's work to end hunger

Target is  among our many food industry partners who, over 5 years ago, have started their own food/non-food  recovery program (through Feeding America, the national food bank network) in Foodshare’s service area.  There are six Target locations  who,  5 or 6 months ago, accounted for approximately  107 lbs. of recovered food per store weekly.  Then this May, Target launched their PFresh concept in these same stores. PFresh, is the name given to Target’s new retail model that now includes fresh produce, dairy and meats.

While their store traffic likely increased as a result,  so has the opportunity for us to recover additional unsalable food.   Now the amount of recovered food averages 664 lbs./store weekly.  Additionally at almost the same time,  Foodshare had  initiated its Volunteer Retail Pick-up Program which provides our volunteers with the opportunity to talk with team members at every location about the various ways Target participates or could participate with Foodshare.

One of those activities is volunteering, and just the other day, Juliette, a member of the New Britain Target team, committed to not only a group volunteering in November and December but will also provide a group of volunteers every month starting in 2012.  Juliette and our other friends at the store realize how important their service to the community is, and how easily they can make a very meaningful contribution to our mission to end hunger.

Thank you Target for all you have done and all that you will do to help your community.
