Unemployed, but no help with food

I chatted today with a single mom who lives in one of Hartford's suburbs.  She recently was laid off and has signed up for unemployment.  She thought it would be wise to see what other resources were available to help her through this time and so went to her school offices to sign her child up for free lunch.  She told me she was astounded to learn that her unemployment benefit was going to put her over the income limits for the free school lunch program!

I'm not nearly as surprised as she was - Feeding America research tells us that about half the people in the state who need help with food are over the income limits for federal assistance programs.
